Binding Words: An Introduction to Chapbook Binding / Workshop Instructor
27th April 2016
Granderson Lab, Trinidad & Tobago
As part of the 2016 NGC Bocas Literary Festival programming, Sonia led an afternoon workshop that introduced book arts to twelve students, a mix of literary festival guests and local creatives, in the Granderson Lab art space. Starting with basic folding structures including the concertina, students then explored sewn structures such as the pamphlet stitch and a Japanese stab-binding, each time challenged with a small experimental writing assignment to place into their new structures, such as erasure of a newspaper column. Students completed the class with thorough beginner knowledge in making handmade books with several models, as well as a basic bookbinding kit and resources to continue their binding practice.
